They remind me of an encounter in an old Fighting Fantasy book (Citadel of Chaos I think).
I believe it was (not very imaginatively) called a spider man.
I also potentially see cursed souls. Undead spirits that now possess the bodies of spiders, warping them to resemble something like their lost human forms.

I believe I shared a hotel room with then at British Fantasycon in the early 90s....
